Proclamation

    Whereas, chronic fatigue and immune dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS) results from a dysfunction of the immune system and its characterized by incapacitating fatigue; and

    WHEREAS; CFIDS is diagnosed by clinically evaluated, unexplained persistent or relapsing debilitating fatigue in a person who has no pervious history' and

    WHEREAS; while people with chronic fatigue syndrome suffer an array of unexplained symptoms, the concurrent occurrence of four or more of the following symptoms must persist or recur over six months for a person to qualify as having chronic fatigue syndrome; substantial impairment in short-term memory or concentration, sore throat, tender lymph nodes, muscle pain, multi-joint pain without joint swelling or redness, headaches of a new type, pattern or severity, unrefreshing sleep, and post-exertional malaise lasting more than 24 hours; and

    WHEREAS, the Greensboro CFS/FMS Support Group provides to its members monthly newsletter, a library with information relating to chronic fatigue syndrome, as well as providing to area hospital libraries this same information;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Keith A. Holliday, Mayor of the City of Greensboro do hereby declair the week of May 7-13, 2000 as

CFIDS AWARENESS WEEK 

and May 12,  2000 as

CFIDS/ME AWARENESS DAY

in Greensboro and command this observance to our citizens.
