Christmas Memories

January 29, 1999

Dear Friends,

It hard to believe that January is almost over. . . . (Didn’t we just celebrate Christmas last week?. . . smile) . . . I remember the Christmas of 1986. That year, we traveled - en masse - to celebrate with my Uncle Joe and his family.

Uncle Joe is the world’s greatest cook - just ask anyone in our family! (Whether you want Southern fried cooking at its best, French cuisine, or flaky, juicy pastries [Hum], my Uncle Joe is your man.) Each meal was a culinary delight. . . . pork loin roast . . . beef stroganoff . . . catfish, collard greens and corn bread. For dessert . . . Baptist cake . . . bread pudding with rum sauce . . . lemon chess pie. In the mornings . . . hot, homemade biscuits . . . eggs cooked in sherry . . . bacon fried to a delicate crisp. We ate, we fellowshipped and we marveled at the marvelous southern California winter. [sigh] . . . Believe it or not . . . this wasn’t the best part of our visit. That was the trip to the Crystal Cathedral.

Uncle Joe took us to the annual pageant at the Crystal Cathedral. [Wonderful!] We sat and watched as the Christmas story came to life right before our eyes! . . . Roman soldiers, bringing news of taxation to the world, rode real-live horses . . . Angels, bringing "good tidings of great joy (Luke 2:10)" to the shepherds, praised God in the air above our heads. . . . Wise men, bringing frankincense and myrrh to the Christ-child, entered on camelback. . . A "star," shining brightly on the Baby Jesus to herald his birth, appeared as a powerful beam of light emanating from somewhere outside the building . . . as if from heaven down. . . . [Hallelujah!] . . . Our souls feasted on the Bread of Life, we praised our Lord together . . . And, hundreds and hundreds of faithful believers and I imagined that day in Bethlehem . . . so long ago.

"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given:

and the government shall be upon his shoulder:

and his name shall be called

Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of peace."

(Isaiah 9:6 KJV).
