The A/C Repairman

August 23, 1999

Dear Friends,

It was a Sunday afternoon. My brother, Willis, and his family had come over for dinner. Things were going well and we were having a good time, when I noticed that something wasn’t right. It seemed to be a little warm . . . or, maybe it was just me. "Surely," I thought, "The air conditioner will come on soon." Rather than cooling off, it grew hotter and hotter until, . . . finally . . . reluctantly . . . I looked at the thermostat. It was 86 degrees inside the house . . . [sigh] . . . The "air" was out.

The next day, I called an air conditioning (A/C) company for an estimate. They sent someone right over. He "fiddled around" with the outside unit, then - tracking mud into my house - checked the unit inside. The verdict? . . . The condenser was "dead" . . . There were holes in the evaporator coil . . . The cost? . . . $1800.00 to $2800.00 dollars . . . I called for a second estimate . . . The next day, another repairman came over. He, too, went into the back yard. He only was there a few moments when, I heard a familiar sound . . . "Whinnneeeeee". . . I’d know that sound anywhere! Quickly donning my mask, I rushed outside.

"Was that the compressor I just heard?"

"Yes," replied The A/C Repairman.

"What did you do to it?"

"Nothing," he said. He paused, briefly. "Are you a Christian?"

"Yes, I am." I replied.

"You must have been praying."

"What about the evaporator coil?" I asked. "There’s nothing wrong with it," he replied. With that, The A/C Repairman went to his truck. He returned with a canister, and charged up the unit. "How much do I owe you?" He never answered my question, instead, he asked me one, "Why are you wearing a mask?" To which I replied, "Because I have to be very careful. When I am exposed to allergens, chemicals, irritants, and pollutants - at levels which don’t affect most people - I can become quite ill." "I want you to know," he said, "God can heal you."

The A/C Repairman prayed for me . . . laid hands on me . . . anointed my head with oil and left. There was no charge.

Is anything too hard for God?
