Love

October 2, 1998

Dear Friends,

There were about thirty of them . . . children . . . ranging in ages from two to eleven . . . cherubic . . . in their new sky blue robes . . . singing . . . with a joyous pleasure . . . singing . . . in tune, out of tune, and somewhere in between . . . singing . . . with truth and conviction . . . singing . . . "Yes, Jesus Loves Me." I was the musician/director of this mighty band of dauntless crooners . . . humbled by the sheer exuberance of their praise. . . . By their basic - yet profound - understanding of this profession of faith: the love of God in Christ Jesus.

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this:
While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)

The children may not have understood the theological or doctrinal impact of the words of this song, but, they understood love. Like all children, these children loved with an unfettered abandon . . . a wide-open acceptance . . . a no holds barred enthusiasm. The unconditional nature of a child's love is in its essence representative of how God loves us . . . He loves us . . . God loves us . . . Why? . . . Because . . . God is love.

The children of my little group are much older now. Some are even in college. Since I have moved to another city, I have not seen many of them in years. And yet . . . despite the years . . . the lesson which they taught me is well remembered: These children - my children - taught me much about God.
