Running Over

 March 5, 1999

Dear Friends

It was his senior year in high school and my son, Michael, was packing for a Fellowship of Christian Athletes retreat. I was baking cookies - as promised - for him to take on the trip and, we were talking about the goodness of the Lord. In the midst of our conversation I recalled these words:

"Give, and it will be given to you.

A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over,

will be poured into your lap . . ."

(Luke 6:38)."

I showed my son a cupful of flour which I’d just measured. Gently, I began to tap the measuring cup against the counter top. The level of the flour in the cup begin to recede. Although there was still exactly one cupful of flour, it was now "pressed down and shaken together." Next, I added more flour to the cup, tapping as I filled. When the flour - once again - filled the cup, I reminded my son that although it appeared to contained one cupful of flour . . . now, in actuality . . . it contained more. It was "pressed down, shaken together." Continuing, I added even more flour . . . tapping and filling . . . tapping and filling . . . tapping and filling . . . until the cup was "running over."

"This," I said to my son, "is how the Lord blesses us."
