Train up the Child
August 21, 1998
Dear Friends,
My son left for college this week. When I spoke with him last night, he was in a hurry. There was a group of fellow students knocking on the door of his dorm room. Calling him. It was time to go to the campus Christian fellowship.
"Train up the child in the way he should go: and when he is old,
he will not depart from it. (Proverbs 22:6 KJV)"
A few years ago I remarked to my son how happy I was that he was seeking to follow Jesus . . . that he had given his life to the Lord. (I knew that - by the grace of God - I had trained him in the right way.) My sons response was very interesting. He told me that he knew other young people whose parents had sought to raise them in Christian homes. However, not all of these children had chosen to live their life for Christ. I thought about that . . . my son was right . . . at some point in their lives, our children (and even us, as parents) must make a conscious decision to follow Christ. We must be "intentional" (to use Rev. Ces word) in our Christianity.
Ill miss my son. The 250 miles between us will seem like a thousand, but I know that he is all right. He has chosen to follow Jesus.
